LET’S TALK SMART AND GREEN: MISKOLC!
By Ákos Kriza
There are still many negative stereotypes about Miskolc. We would like to change this perception – partly with your help. The city has come far from the situation created by the collapse of its heavy industry and is beginning to return to its original harmonious and people-friendly atmosphere. For example: - Miskolc – the only place in Hungary – is far above the European average in terms of renewable energy use; - Miskolc is Hungary’s first model city in the Green City movement; - based on its achievements to date Miskolc was invited as guest of honour to the 2020 Travel Exhibition. This increasingly vibrant, interesting and modern city has set itself the aim of becoming a green and smart city that, within the next decade, provides an outstandingly high standard of living for all generations. To achieve this aim the city leadership entrusted experts to create a Green Book that gives practical help as to which factors should be born in mind concerning sustainability during urban development projects. To counterbalance the harmful effects of consumerism we support the Subscribe & Sharing community use to create – environmentally friendly and cost-effective – solutions and ideas. University students and teachers are also involved in this development work. During the study tour we would like to show how much this city – which has the largest green space in the country – is doing in practice to achieve its aims. We take a look at intelligent developments in Miskolc that have already been achieved and others that are in progress. For example: - We have fitted all the public transport vehicles with free WiFi (this has only happened in Miskolc, nowhere else in Hungary!). The next step is to extend the network to the city’s 52 tram stops which in practice will create a free WiFi zone 11 kilometres long. - We are introducing an electronic ticket system to the public transport. - We will complement the existing local bus fleet of 75 buses with a further 70 CNG buses that have almost zero harmful emissions. - In order to increase the popularity of electric cars in the next 8 years we will increase the number of charging stations in Miskolc to 160. - Miskolc will be the first Hungarian city (indeed there are only a few in Europe), whose intelligent traffic management system is 100 % centrally controlled and able to adapt and manage the flow according to the traffic. - In the interests of public safety, which has already significantly increased, by the end of next year we will have built the largest CCTV system in Hungary with 900 observation points and 130 km of optical network. - Smart grid system: to connect in a single network council buildings and consumers fitted with solar panels and other units of electrical energy production. Thus the system regulates the production combining that which is dependent on the weather (e.g. solar panels) and power stations that have predictable production (biogas, landfill gas). - By fitting smart metering the system can work even more efficiently. - The closed system that brings together all the above elements enables cost-efficient operation and minimised CO2 emissions, and eventually the complete energy independence of the city. - We are constructing a GIS system that is unique in Hungary in which, in addition to the waterworks, the distance heating system and other layers, all trees and bushes in public space will be surveyed by the end of 2020. Over and above its usefulness, this presentation of green perspective also promises to be absolutely spectacular. - The Tisza Miskolc application (so people can report problems in public areas) and the Miskolc app (for tourists) are being created. - The development of an integrated waste use system, for example regarding the use of rubbish from municipal reconstruction work and bi-products from the biogas plant, the composting of green waste. - Smart bins are coming! We will fit the recycling bins with ultrasound sensors so we have up-to-date information about the level of material and thus we can optimise waste collection and transport.
